2012 WHL DRAFT PROFILE - THOMAS LENCHYSHYN

Leading up to the 2012 WHL Draft the WHL will feature a one-on-one interview with top bantam age prospects.  This week we feature Thomas Lenchyshyn, an underage player for the Manitoba Midget AAA Eastman Selects.

Following in the footsteps of last year’s 4th overall Bantam pick Jordan Thomson, and former Eastman Select and Swift Current Bronco Ian White, Lenchyshyn hopes that playing Midget hockey as an underager, against opponents as much as three years older than him will advance his hockey development.

What do you enjoy most about hockey?

I’d have to say just always having to compete.

How would you describe yourself as a hockey player?

I’m a hard working player, I can skate well, I’m physical, and have a pretty good shot…still working on that though.

What hockey player do you look up to the most?

Nicklas Lidstrom. He’s just such a humble person, a good leader all around.

What hockey player do you hope to play like one day?

I actually hope to play like Shea Weber. He makes the right play, he’s got an unbelievable shot, he’s physical, and he shuts down other players.

What are you goals in hockey?

I always have little, short term goals, but long term I would like to play in the NHL. Just little stuff, like improving my play, improving certain skills. I would like to see us (Eastman Selects) maybe make a run in the playoffs, maybe we’ll get hot here at the end of the year.

What school are you currently attending? What is your favourite school subject?

I’m attending Steinbach Junior High School. I like science, it’s just really interesting.

What hobbies do you have outside of hockey?

I love fishing. I really like fishing in the Lake of the Woods area.

What is your nickname?

Lenny, short for Lenchyshyn.

What is your most cherished hockey memory?

My first year of Pee Wee my team (Steinbach Millers) won our provincials at home (against Brandon), so that was really special.

What do you think will be the next big hockey moment in your life?

I hope to maybe get drafted into the WHL, that would be really cool.
