Mirco Mueller just completed his first season in the WHL with the Everett Silvertips.  The Swiss defenceman appeared in 63 games for the Silvertips during the 2012-13 campaign, scoring six goals and 31 points and finishing second among all ‘Tips’ rookies in points.  The 6’4 defender also added an assist in six post-season contests for the Silvertips.

A very strong skater with a well-rounded skill set, Mueller emerged as a key contributor on the ‘Tips’ blue line, especially after top NHL prospect Ryan Murray went down with a season-ending injury in November. Mueller’s poise, hockey sense and intelligence, coupled with his athletic abilities, helped round him into a very strong presence in the defensive zone.  His mobility allows him to cover a lot of ice and his quick stick and gap control makes him incredibly tough to beat in 1-on-1 situations, and his willingness to block shots and play a physical game adds to his defensive strength.  Though he didn’t put up eye-popping numbers, Mueller also boasts solid offensive abilities.  His tremendous skating skills enable him to rush the puck up ice or join the rush.  He also boasts a heavy, accurate shot from the point and good vision and playmaking skills, making him an asset on the power play.

“He skates very, very well,” said Silvertips’ general manager Garry Davidson of Mueller’s best attribute.  “He covers a ton of ground, and there are a lot of times where you think he’s beaten but he’s able to recover.

“He’s got a really good stick on both sides of the puck in that he’s very good with his stick defensively, he always has it in the right spots taking away passing lanes and getting it in shooting lanes, and he also has the ability to make plays and handle the puck offensively and shoot the puck,” he said

While Mueller’s strengths are obvious from a defensive standpoint, there certainly exists some untapped offensive potential that Mueller should be able to develop with time.

“Right now, he’s definitely more of a stay-at-home, conservative type of defenceman, but I think he definitely has the potential to grow into more of a substantial offensive role,” said Davidson.  “He’s always played behind older guys and played up a level in his development.

“He’s always been one of the younger guys on his teams, so we’ve really worked with him to help him develop the confidence to be a go-to guy, and that will definitely help him when he gets to the pro level,” he said.

The Silvertips’ 1st round pick, 11th overall, in the 2012 CHL Import Draft, Mueller has represented Switzerland at the Under-17, U-18 and U-20 levels, suiting up most recently for Switzerland’s entry at the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship.  Before coming to North America to join the Silvertips, Mueller played for Kolten’s Under-17 and Under-20 teams, and even played a number of games for Kloten in the Swiss pro league.

Did you know…Mueller, at 11th overall, was the ‘Tips’ highest-drafted player in the CHL Import Draft since their expansion season in 2003-04…Mueller cites former Detroit Red Wings’ star Nicklas Lidstrom as a player he models his game after…Mueller’s 31 points are the second-most by a rookie defenceman in Silvertips’ history, behind only Radko Gudas (37pts, 2009-10).
