CALGARY, AB. – The WHL Player of the Week is forward Cody Eakin of the Swift Current Broncos.
Eakin picked up nine points, scoring six goals and three assists to go with a +6 rating, in three road games over the past week, helping the Broncos to a 2-1-0-0 record in that span.
On Tuesday, December 7th, the Broncos were in Chilliwack to face the Bruins on the first stop of their trip through the B.C. Division. Eakin scored his fourth career hat-trick, including the game-winner, added an assist and was named the games 1st Star as the Broncos defeated the Bruins 5-4. The next night the Broncos were in Kelowna to take on the Rockets. Eakin scored the game winning goal, picked up a pair of assists and was named the games 1st Star as the Broncos downed the Rockets 4-1. On Friday, December 10th, the Broncos travelled to Kamloops to face the Blazers. Eakin scored twice as the Blazers edged the visiting Broncos 3-2. He was named the games 3rd Star.
Eakin’s nine points in the past three games has him ranked 15th among all WHL scorers with 39 points (18 goals, 21 assists) in 30 games played. The Broncos have won seven of their past 10 games and currently sit third in the WHL East Division with a 19-17-0-0 record for 38 points.
Eakin, a 19 year old from Winnipeg, MB, is playing his fourth full season with the Swift Current Broncos who made him their 1st round – 6th overall pick at the 2006 WHL Bantam Draft. The 3rd round – 85th overall selection of the Washington Capitals in the 2009 NHL Draft recently played for Team WHL at the Subway Super Series, and is currently competing at Team Canada's World Junior Selection Camp in Toronto.
The WHL has also nominated Drew Owsley of the Tri-City Americans for the CHL Goaltender of the Week Award. Owsley posted a 2-0-0-0 record this past week, stopping 46 of 48 shots faced for a 1.070 goals-against average and 0.958 save percentage. Owsley, a native of Lethbridge, AB, led the Americans to a 4-1 and 5-1 win over the Seattle Thunderbirds in a home-and-home series this past weekend.
