HUSKIES' BORTIS WHL GRAD OF THE MONTH

EDMONTON – Fourth-year University of Saskatchewan forward Kyle Bortis is the November / December Canada West men’s hockey Husky-WHL Graduate of the Month.

Bortis, also the last member of the Huskies to win the award, took home the honour in October 2011 and joins a small group of six Huskies who have won the award multiple times. Sixteen different Huskies have won the award a total of 24 times since its inception back in October 1989.

Each monthly winner during the season receives a $500 cheque towards the cost of education, a plaque, a letter from WHL Commissioner Ron Robison and a computer bag.

Bortis, a 24-year-old former member of the Western Hockey League’s Calgary Hitmen, picked up six goals and six assists as Saskatchewan posted a 6-2-0 record, also claiming the #3 CIS Top 10 ranking and second spot in Canada West with an overall conference record of 13-3-0.

Having not missed a regular season game in four years, the Agriculture and Biology student has a career total of 117 points in 100 games, first among active players, accumulating 43 goals and 74 assists. In 14 playoff games, he has six goals and 14 points.

Every year the Western Hockey League recognizes hundreds of hockey student-athletes across Canada as parts of its scholarship program. In 2012-13, there are 125 student-athlete recipients from Canada West Athletics, and Kyle Bortis is one of 24 student-athletes with the Huskies men’s hockey team to receive support.

Prior to attending the University of Saskatchewan, Bortis played four seasons in the Western Hockey League - two each with the Swift Current Broncos and Calgary Hitmen. In 236 career WHL games, the 5-11 Saskatoon native had 86 goals and 123 assists for 209 regular season points and an impressive +59 rating. Over 40 post-season contests Bortis earned 13-23-36, going to the conference final in 2009 with the Hitmen after Calgary had finished first overall in the regular season standings.
