HAWKS TAKE DOWN COUGARS – Ty Rattie scored twice, including his 50th goal of the season, to lead the Portland Winterhawks to a 7-2 victory over the visiting Prince George Cougars in Western Hockey League action on Monday.
Sven Bartschi also scored twice while Chase De Leo, Joe Morrow and Brendan Leipsic also counted for the Winterhawks (41-15-2-1), who pick up their seventh win in a row and move into first place in the U.S. Division. Mac Carruth turned in a 27-save effort to post his 37th win of the season.
Troy Bourke and Daulton Siwak scored for the Cougars (19-37-0-2), who were outshot 50-29 by the hosts in the contest. Drew Owsley and Devon Fordyce combined for 43 saves in the loss.
OIL KINGS 5, TIGERS 4 S/O
Tyler Maxwell and Martin Gernat scored in a shootout to lift the Edmonton Oil Kings to a 5-4 win over the visiting Medicine Hat Tigers on Monday.
Dylan Wruck – with his 20th of the season – tied the game at 4-4 with just 37 seconds remaining in the third period while Michael St. Croix, T.J. Foster and Mark Pysyk also scored for the Oil Kings (39-14-3-4), who erased a 3-0 deficit after the first period en route to the win. Tristan Jarry made 16 saves on 17 shots through 54 minutes of work in regulation, and wasn’t beaten in the shootout to claim the win after replacing starter Laurent Brossoit, who allowed three goals on 10 shots in the first 10:20 of the contest.
James Berttauer – with a goal and two assists – Curtis Valk, Patrik Parkkonen and Emerson Etem scored for the Tigers (36-20-2-3), who went 2-for-5 on the man advantage in the contest. Kenny Cameron made 36 saves in regulation, but was beaten twice in the shootout to absorb the loss.
BRONCOS 5, WARRIORS 4 S/O
Brad Hoban scored the lone goal in a shootout to lead the Swift Current Broncos to a 5-4 victory over the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors on Monday.
Taylor Vause tallied a goal and a pair of assists while Hoban, Coda Gordon and Graeme Craig also counted for the Broncos (23-32-2-4), who converted three of seven power play chances en route to their second win in a row. Jon Groenheyde made 32 saves in regulation, and wasn’t beaten in the shootout to record the win.
Kenton Miller scored twice – his 27th and 28th goals of the season – while Cam Braes and Quinton Howden also scored for the Warriors (37-16-5-2), who suffer their second loss in a row but remain in first place in the East Division. Spencer Tremblay made 30 stops in regulation, but was beaten once in the shootout to suffer the loss.
