CALGARY, AB. - The Western Hockey League announced today that Red Deer Rebels defenceman Alex Petrovic is the WHL Player of the Week.
Petrovic collected nine points, scoring two goals and seven assists to go with a +3 rating, in four road games over the past week helping the Rebels to a 3-0-0-1 record.
On Wednesday, November 9, the Rebels were in Kelowna to face the Rockets in game two of their five game road swing through British Columbia. Petrovic tallied one goal, added two assists and was named the games 1st Star in the Rebels 6-4 win over the Rockets. On Friday, November 11, Petrovic collected two assists in the Rebels 5-3 win over the Blazers at the Interior Savings Centre in Kamloops. The next night, Saturday, November 12, the Rebels were in Victoria for the first game of their weekend double header with the Royals. Petrovic scored one goal, three assists and was named the games 1st Star in the Rebels 7-4 triumph over the Royals. On Sunday, November 13, the Royals forced Red Deer to the shoot-out and defeated the Rebels 4-3.
Petrovic currently sits 5th among all WHL defenceman in scoring with 20 points (2 goals, 18 assists) in 20 games played this season. The Rebels have posted a 6-0-0-2 record in their past eight games and currently sit 1st place in the WHL Central Division and 2nd place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 14-4-0-2 for 30 points. Petrovic, a native of Edmonton, AB, was a Rebels 2nd round - 33rd overall WHL Draft pick in 2007 and was selected in the 2nd round - 36th overall by the Florida Panthers in the 2010 NHL Draft. He will represent Team WHL during the 2011 SUBWAY Super Series this Wednesday night, taking on the Russian Junior National team in Regina at the Brandt Centre.
The WHL has also nominated Corbin Boes of the Brandon Wheat Kings for the CHL Goaltender of the Week Award. Boes posted a 2-0-0-0 record this past week, stopping 82 of 85 shots faced for a 0.965 save-percentage and 1.13 goals-against average. Boes, a native of Saskatoon, SK, led the Wheat Kings to wins over the Prince Albert Raiders (4-1, 1st Star) and the Swift Current Broncos (4-1).
