The Everett Silvertips locked up the final playoff spot in the Western Conference after the Seattle Thunderbirds fell to Portland on the last day of action in the 2011-12 WHL regular season on Sunday.
WINTERHAWKS 8, THUNDERBIRDS 2
Oliver Gabriel scored three goals to lead the Portland Winterhawks to an 8-2 win over the visiting Seattle Thunderbirds in Western Hockey League action on Sunday.
Ty Rattie scored twice and set up another while Troy Rutkowski, Derrick Pouliot and Joey Baker also scored for the Winterhawks (49-19-3-1), who went 2-for-6 on the power play in the contest and finish the season in third place in the Western Conference. Brendan Burke made 29 saves to post the win.
Shea Theodore and Burke Gallimore scored for the Thunderbirds (25-45-1-1), who are eliminated from playoff contention with the defeat to the Winterhawks. Calvin Pickard made 38 saves in a losing cause for the T-Birds.
