TEAM WHL TAKES ON RUSSIA TONIGHTNov 14, 2012 - 02:19 MST
Vancouver, B.C. – The 2012 SUBWAY® Super Series enters its final leg in its 10th anniversary as Team WHL welcomes Russia for Game 5 of the six-game series on Wednesday night in Vancouver, B.C. (7:00pm PST; Sportsnet).
The Russians arrived on the west coast having split the first four games of the series, with Team QMJHL and Team OHL each managing a win and a loss. Team WHL will aim to take the series with a win in Vancouver on Wednesday night.
Captained by Ryan Murray of the Everett Silvertips, Team WHL boasts a defence corps featuring five first-round NHL draft picks. Murray, a veteran of Canada’s national junior team last year, was the second overall pick of the 2012 NHL Draft, chosen by the Columbus Blue Jackets, while Edmonton’s Griffin Reinhart (4th overall, NYI), Moose Jaw’s Morgan Rielly (5th overall, TOR), Red Deer’s Mathew Dumba (7th overall, MIN) and Portland’s Derrick Pouliot (8th overall, PIT) were also selected in the 2012 NHL Draft. Saskatoon’s Duncan Siemens (11th overall, COL) was a first-round pick in the 2011 NHL Draft.
Up front, Team WHL will seek offense from the likes of 2013 NHL Draft-eligible Hunter Shinkaruk of the Medicine Hat Tigers, Edmonton Oil Kings’ pivot Michael St. Croix, a New York Rangers prospect, and Chicago Blackhawks’ first-round pick Mark McNeill of the Prince Albert Raiders.
Russia boasts plenty of star power, led by Nail Yakupov, a former member of the OHL’s Sarnia Sting who was the first overall pick in the 2012 NHL Draft. Yakupov and team mate Maxim Shalunov have each picked up two goals and four points through the first four games of the tournament.
Two WHL players will suit up for the Russians versus Team WHL in the SUBWAY Super Series with Saskatoon Blades goaltender Andrey Makarov and Seattle’s Alex Delnov both getting the nod.
Team WHL split two games versus Russia in last year’s event, winning 5-2 in Regina, SK, in Game 5 before dropping a 7-5 decision in Moose Jaw the next night. Overall, the WHL boasts a 14-4 record versus Russia through the previous nine editions of the SUBWAY® Super Series.
