COUGARS CLAW DOWN AMERICANS IN OVERTIME – Jesse Forsberg scored 1:02 into overtime to lift the visiting Prince George Cougars to a 5-4 win over the Tri-City Americans in Western Hockey League action on Tuesday night.
Troy Bourke scored twice while Spencer Asuchak and Linden Springer also counted for the Cougars (23-45-0-2), who remain alive in their fight for a playoff spot in the Western Conference. Drew Owsley turned aside 31 of 35 shots he faced to beat his former club.
Adam Hughesman scored his 47th and 48th goals of the season and added an assist while Brendan Shinnimin and Malte Stromwall also scored for the Americans (49-17-2-2), who move into sole possession of first place in the overall WHL standings with the point gained from the O/T loss. Ty Rimmer made 19 saves in the loss versus his former team.
THUNDERBIRDS 3, CHIEFS 1
Connor Honey scored two goals as the visiting Seattle Thunderbirds skated to a 3-1 victory over the Spokane Chiefs on Tuesday night.
Seth Swenson – with his 10th goal of the season – also counted for the Thunderbirds (24-43-1-1), who pick up their second straight win and now sit just one point behind Victoria for eighth place in the Western Conference. Calvin Pickard turned in a 41-save performance to backstop the T-Birds to their critical win.
Steve Kuhn – playing in his 285th consecutive game – scored the only goal for the Chiefs (36-24-5-4), who remain two points behind Vancouver for fourth place in the Western Conference. Mac Engel made 21 saves in a losing cause.
BLADES 11, RAIDERS 5
Ryan Olsen, Jake Trask and Travis McEvoy each scored twice to help the Saskatoon Blades to an 11-5 win over the visiting Prince Albert Raiders on Tuesday.
Matej Stransky tallied a goal and four assists while Nick Zajac, Josh Nicholls, Darren Dietz and Brent Benson also scored for the Blades (39-28-1-2), who went 4-for-6 on the power play as they move into fifth place in the Eastern Conference standings. Andrey Makarov turned in a 28-save effort to post the win.
Mark McNeill notched a goal and an assist while Mike Winther, Joey Santucci – with his first WHL marker – Josh Morrissey and Justin Maylan also found the net for the Raiders (21-42-3-3), who were outscored 6-1 in the third period en route to their second loss in a row. Cole Holowenko and Luke Lee-Knight combined for 32 saves in the defeat.
REBELS 4, TIGERS 2
Alex Petrovic scored a pair of goals as the visiting Red Deer Rebels doubled up the Medicine Hat Tigers 4-2 on Tuesday night.
Tyson Ness and Adam Kambeitz also scored for the Rebels (31-33-1-5), who outscored the Tigers 3-1 in the final frame as they snap a four-game losing skid. Deven Dubyk made 28 saves to claim his 15th win of the season.
James Bettauer – with his 21st goal of the season – and Cole Grbavac tallied for the Tigers (42-23-2-3), who remain two points up on the Hitmen for third place in the Eastern Conference but have now played one more game than Calgary. Tyler Bunz made 31 saves in the setback.
