Calgary - Ron Robison, Commissioner, Western Hockey League announced today that the Western Hockey League has established a new joint committee with the Universities and Colleges in Western Canada to further enhance scholarship opportunities for graduates of the WHL.
rThe Western Hockey League Scholarship Advisory Committee will consist of representation from the Canada West University Athletic Association, Alberta Colleges Athletic Association and the Western Hockey League. Members appointed to the Committee today included Val Schneider, Executive Director, Canada West University Athletic Association; Al Ferchuk, President, Canadian College Athletic Association; Don Wilson, Athletic Director, University of Calgary; Jack Brodsky, Governor, Saskatoon Blades (WHL); Jim Donlevy, Western Hockey League Education Consultant and Ron Robison, Commissioner of the Western Hockey League.
rThe WHL Scholarship Advisory Committee will be responsible to promote the current scholarship program and assist with fund raising efforts, designed to further enhance scholarship opportunities available to WHL graduates at Western Canadian Universities and Colleges.
rCurrently, the WHL provides an extensive scholarship which includes complete funding of all tuition, books and fees, for all graduates players who choose to continue their education at any post-secondary institution. Since 1990, WHL clubs have awarded scholarships to over 1,200 graduate players which represents close to $3.0 million in total financial support.
