Calgary, AB – There will be a new look to this year’s WHL U.S. Prospects Camp as the WHL has entered into a partnership with Under Armour.
The newly named WHL U.S. Combine Camp, powered by Under Armour, will offer, for the first time, on-ice and off-ice testing for all players in attendance. This marks the 9th consecutive year the WHL has hosted a camp focusing on U.S.-born prospects. The camp starts this weekend (April 11-13, 2014) at the Anaheim Ice Facility in Anaheim, CA.
The WHL U.S. Combine Camp in Anaheim will provide a unique opportunity for U.S.-born hockey players to participate with other top ranked 1999 born players in the only evaluation camp conducted by the WHL in the U.S. this season. The WHL is the largest Major Junior Hockey League in North America and is a leading supplier of player talent to the National Hockey League. Virtually all of the WHL’s 22 Member Clubs be in attendance to evaluate players’ ability to play at the WHL level. The WHL U.S. Combine Camp also features a WHL Prospects Information Session, where players and their families will learn about the benefits of playing Major Junior hockey, the highest level in the Canadian system, and details on the WHL scholarship program.
The testing will take place on Friday, April 11, at the WHL U.S. Combine Camp and will consist of a series of off-ice and on-ice tests that will be entered into a special player database. The players in attendance at the Camp will be able to access the database and compare their results with the players in the same age group. The testing will be conducted by Toronto-based Sport Testing Inc., a world leader in athlete testing systems.
The WHL U.S. Combine Camp is open only to U.S. residents born in 1999, who live in the Western United States (all U.S. States west of the Mississippi River and Alaska). Of the over 40 U.S. born players currently on WHL rosters, the majority attended a WHL U.S. Prospects Camp in previous years.
Four WHL Head Coaches will be in attendance and will run the benches of each Camp team. This year’s coaches will be Don Hay (Vancouver Giants); Don Nachbaur (Spokane Chiefs); Mark Holick (Prince George Cougars); and Malcolm Cameron (Regina Pats). The WHL will also be sending WHL referees to officiate the games held on Saturday, April 12 and Sunday, April 13.
This will mark the first time the WHL has conducted combine testing in the U.S. The WHL Combines will return later this year in Dallas July-24, Denver May-30, Phoenix June-1, and Minneapolis July-26. The testing will be administered by the WHL, in partnership with Okanagan Hockey Schools, an international leader in hockey school instructional programs and hockey academies.
