CANADA WEST CONFERENCE REPORT – WHL grads Sean Ringrose and Eric Hunter combined for five goals and 13 points in two weekend games to lead the visiting University of Alberta Golden Bears to a pair of victories over the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns.
Also on the weekend, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies outscored the U.B.C. Thunderbirds 12-2 in earning two victories in Saskatoon, SK, while the University of Manitoba Bisons skated to a pair of victories over the University of Regina Cougars in Regina, SK.
In Lethbridge, AB on Friday, Ringrose, a former Medicine Hat Tiger, notched two goals and four assists while former Prince George Cougar Eric Hunter chipped in two goals and three helpers as the Golden Bears skated to an 8-5 win over the Pronghorns. Former Red Deer Rebel Dustin Moore notched a goal and an assist for the Pronghorns in the loss.
On Saturday, Hunter scored the winner while Ringrose drew an assist to lead the Golden Bears to a 2-0 win over the Pronghorns. Former Swift Current Broncos goalie Travis Yonkman made 19 saves to record the shutout.
In Saskatoon, SK, on Friday, former Kootenay Ice sniper Andrew Bailey scored twice and WHL grads Chad Greenan and Kyle Bortis each chipped in three assists to lead the University of Saskatchewan Huskies to a 7-1 win over the visiting U.B.C. Thunderbirds. Former Spokane Chief Jeff Lynch had the lone goal for the T-Birds.
On Saturday, WHL grads Chris Durand and Shaun Vey each tallied a goal and an assist while former WHL netminder David Reekie made 25 saves as the Huskies topped the T-Birds 5-1 to complete the sweep. Brandon Campos, a former Everett Silvertip and Chilliwack Bruin, scored the only goal for the Thunderbirds.
In Regina, SK, on Friday, WHL grad Kyle Howarth scored twice and former Prince Albert Raiders captain also counted to lead the visiting University of Manitoba Bisons to a 3-2 win over the University of Regina Cougars. Former WHL netminder Adam Ward made 23 saves in the loss for the Cougars.
On Saturday night, former Saskatoon Blade and Tri-City American Blair Macaulay scored once and added two assists to lead the Bisons to a 4-1 triumph over the Cougars. Ward made 35 saves in the loss for the Cougars.
