37 WHL PLAYERS SELECTED IN 2013 NHL DRAFT

Nine of the WHL players selected in the 2014 NHL Draft were chosen in the first round, including four players selected among the Top 10.

Sam Reinhart of the Kootenay Ice was the first WHL player selected in the 2014 NHL Draft, chosen by the Buffalo Sabres with the second overall pick.  Reinhart, a product of Vancouver, BC, becomes the highest drafted player in Kootenay Ice franchise history, and just the third Ice player to be chosen in the first round of the NHL draft.

24 WHL forwards were selected in the 2014 NHL Draft while 13 defencemen were chosen.

Since the NHL Draft’s inception in 1969, a total of 1,854 WHL players have been selected by NHL Clubs

33 WHL PLAYERS SELECTED IN 2013 NHL DRAFT

Newark, NJ – The Western Hockey League is proud to announce that 33 WHL players were selected in the 2013 NHL Draft on Sunday, June 30th, at the Prudential Centre in Newark, New Jersey.

Defenceman Seth Jones of the Portland Winterhawks was the first WHL player to be selected, being chosen fourth overall by the Nashville Predators.  Jones was one of eight WHL players to be chosen in the first round of the 2013 NHL Draft, which is the most WHL players taken in the opening round since the 2009 NHL Draft when nine were chosen.

A total of 16 WHL defencemen were drafted by NHL Clubs in the 2013 NHL Draft while 12 WHL forwards and five WHL goaltenders were also selected.

101 CHL players were selected in the seven rounds of the 2013 NHL Draft, representing nearly 48% of the 211 drafted players.  A record 22 CHL players were chosen in the first round.

Since the NHL Draft’s inception in 1969, a total of 1,817 WHL players have been selected by NHL Clubs.

32 WHL PLAYERS SELECTED IN 2012 NHL DRAFT

Calgary, AB – Everett Silvertips' defenceman Ryan Murray became the first WHL player selected in the first round of the 2012 NHL Draft when the Columbus Blue Jackets used the 2nd overall selection to pick the 18-year-old White City, SK product this Friday in the 2012 NHL Draft at the CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh, PA.  Overall, the WHL had six players selected in the first round of the 2012 NHL Draft, including five of the first eight draft picks, which was last accomplished in 1995: Ryan Murray (EVT); Griffin Reinhart (EDM); Morgan Rielly (MJ); Mathew Dumba (RD); Derrick Pouliot (POR) and Henrik Samuelsson (EDM).

A total of 32 WHL Players were selected in the 2012 NHL Draft, including 19 in the first three rounds of the Draft.  The Calgary Hitmen, Edmonton Oil Kings, Portland Winterhawks and Kelowna Rockets all led the way with three players selected in the 2012 NHL Draft.

33 WHL Players Selected in 2011 NHL Entry Draft

Calgary, AB – The Western Hockey League is proud to announce that 33 WHL players were selected in the 2011 NHL Draft, with five being selected in the first round. Red Deer Rebels’ forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins was selected first overall in the 2011 NHL Draft when the Edmonton Oilers used their first pick to select the 18-year-old (1993) Burnaby, B.C. product yesterday in Minnesota at the Xcel Energy Center, marking the first British Columbia born player to be selected first overall at the NHL Draft.

The Canadian Hockey League also announced today that 101 CHL players were selected in the seven rounds of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft representing nearly 48% of the 211 drafted players. The 101 players includes 21 selected in the first round which ties a CHL record set back in 1998 when the first consisted of 27 picks. Of the 101 players selected, the Ontario Hockey League leads the way with 46 players selected matching the 2008 NHL Entry Draft as their highest total since 1999 when 52 players were selected. This season the Western Hockey League had 33 players, and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League had 22 players selected.

Calgary, AB – The Western Hockey League is proud to announce that 43 WHL players were selected in the 2010 NHL Draft, with seven being selected in the first round, marking the WHL’s best showing at the NHL Draft since 2005.

Portland Winterhawks’ centerman Ryan Johansen became the first of 43 WHL players selected when the Columbus Blue Jackets used the 4th overall selection to pick the 17-year-old Port Moody, B.C. product yesterday in Los Angeles at the Staples Center.  Portland led all WHL Clubs with an unprecedented eight Winterhawks being selected throughout the draft.

Calgary, AB – Vancouver Giants centerman Evander Kane became the first of five WHL players selected in the first round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft when the Atlanta Thrashers used the 4th overall selection to pick the 17-year-old Vancouver, B.C. product this evening at the Bell Centre in Montreal.

37 WHL PLAYERS SELECTED IN 2008 NHL ENTRY DRAFT

Calgary, AB - Kelowna Rockets' defenceman Luke Schenn  became the first of nine WHL players selected in the first round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft when the Toronto Maple Leafs used the fifth overall selection to pick the 18-year-old Saskatoon, SK product on Friday, June 20th in Ottawa, ON. This is the third time since 1982 that nine WHL Players have been selected in the first round of the NHL Entry Draft (1982, 2007, 2008).

The Toronto Maple Leafs acquired the fifth overall selection in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft from the New York Islanders in exchange for their 2008 seventh overall pick plus two conditional draft picks.

In total, 37 WHL players were selected at the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

24 WHL Players Selected in 2006 NHL Entry Draft

Vancouver, B.C. - The Western Hockey League is proud to announce that 24 WHL players have been selected by NHL teams at the 2006 NHL Entry Draft in Vancouver, B.C.

Of the 24 WHL players selected in the 2006 NHL Draft, four were selected in the first round.

Peter Mueller became the first-ever Everett Silvertips player to be selected by an NHL team in the Draft after being chosen eighth overall by the Phoenix Coyotes.

The Bloomington, MN, product and 2006 WHL Rookie of the Year scored 26 goals and 58 points in 52 games for the ‘Tips in 2005-06, and played for the United States at the 2006 World Junior Championship.

Other WHL players selected in the opening round include Michael Grabner of the Spokane Chiefs (14th overall - Vancouver Canucks), Prince George Cougars defenseman Ty Wishart (16th overall - San Jose Sharks), and Everett Silvertips goaltender Leland Irving (26th overall - Calgary Flames).

Since the inception of the NHL Entry Draft in 1969, 1614 WHL Players have been selected in the NHL's annual draft.

43 WHL Players Selected in 2005 NHL Entry Draft

OTTAWA, ONT - The Western Hockey League is proud to announce that 43 WHL players were selected by National Hockey League clubs at the 2005 NHL Entry Draft in Ottawa, Ontario.

Four WHL players were selected in the first round, including three players who were taken in the top 10.

Tri-City Americans goaltender Carey Price of Williams Lake, B.C. was the first WHL player taken as he was selected fifth overall by the Montreal Canadiens. At fifth overall, Price joins former Calgary Centennials goaltender John Davidson and former Flin Flon netminder Ray Martinyuk as the only three WHL goaltenders in league history to be drafted in the top five.

Vancouver Giants hometown hero Gilbert Brule was chosen sixth overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets, while Taber, AB native Devin Setoguchi, who plays for the Saskatoon Blades, was selected eighth overall by the San Jose Sharks.

Meantime, the Florida Panthers traded up to select Moose Jaw Warriors forward Kenndal McArdle with the 20th overall pick.

Since the inception of the NHL Entry Draft in 1969, 1590 WHL Players have been selected in the NHL's annual draft. It was also the 15th consecutive year that more than 40 WHL Players were selected in the draft.
