WHL Awards

The Western Hockey League is privileged to be able to honour a number of key individuals who were instrumental in the development of the League.  With this in mind, each of the WHL's Trophies and Awards bears a tribute to our contributors.

Ed Chynoweth Cup – Western Hockey League Champion (Calgary Hitmen)

In 1973 Ed Chynoweth was appointed the first full time president of the WHL, and soon after became the first ever president of the Canadian Hockey League, positions he held for over 20 years. In 2007, the WHL renamed their championship trophy The Ed Chynoweth Cup in recognition of the extraordinary contribution Mr. Chynoweth made to Major Junior hockey and the game in Canada. Mr. Chynoweth, who passed away in April 2008, was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame posthumously in November 2008.

MasterCard Memorial Cup Championship – CHL Champion (Windsor Spitfires)

The Memorial Cup has been the ultimate goal of Major Junior hockey players since the Ontario Hockey Association donated the trophy in 1919 to honor the young men who sacrificed their lives in World War I.  The MasterCard Memorial Cup has been decided through a tournament format basis since 1972.
