DENNY'S WHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK


MAY 5, 2014 - MAY 12, 2014: EDGARS KULDA, EDMONTON OIL KINGS

The Western Hockey League announced today that Edmonton Oil Kings’ forward Edgars Kulda is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week for the week ending May 12, 2014.  

Kulda scored four goals and three assists for seven points along with a +2 rating in five games over the past week to help lead the Oil Kings to a 4-0-0-1 record versus the Portland Winterhawks in that span as they captured the 2014 WHL Championship.

On Tuesday, May 6, Kulda scored the game-winning goal while being named the game’s 2nd Star in a 3-2 win over the visiting Winterhawks in Game 3 of the series.  On Wednesday, May 7, Kulda recorded an assist on the game-winning goal in a 2-0 victory in Game 4 in Edmonton.  On Friday, May 9, he notched a goal and earned an assist on the game-winning goal in a 3-2 triumph in Game 5 of the series in Portland.  On Sunday, May 11, Kulda scored a pair of goals in a 6-5 overtime loss to the visiting Winterhawks in Game 6 of the series.  On Monday, May 12, Kulda stretched his point streak to five games with an assist in Edmonton’s 4-2 victory in Game 7 of the series in Portland.

Kulda is in his second season in the WHL with the Oil Kings.  A 19-year-old from Riga, Latvia, Kulda scored 30 goals and 60 points in 66 games during the 2013-14 regular season, and added 10 goals and 22 points in 21 post-season contests.  The Oil Kings’ first-round pick, 38th overall, in the 2012 CHL Import Draft, Kulda has amassed 36 goals and 77 points in 130 career regular-season contests.  He is eligible for the 2014 NHL Draft.


APRIL 28, 2014 - MAY 4, 2014: PAUL BITTNER, PORTLAND WINTERHAWKS

The Western Hockey League announced today that Portland Winterhawks’ forward Paul Bittner is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week for the week ending May 4, 2014.  

Bittner tallied three goals and one assist for four points along with a +3 rating over two games this past weekend, leading the Winterhawks to a pair of victories over the Edmonton Oil Kings in the 2014 WHL Championship Series.

On Saturday, May 3, Bittner scored twice and was named the game’s 2nd Star as the Winterhawks managed a 5-2 win over the visiting Oil Kings in Game 1 of the WHL Championship Series in Portland, OR.  On Sunday, Bittner notched his fifth goal of the post-season and added an assist to help the Winterhawks to a 3-1 triumph over the Oil Kings in Game 2 of the best-of-seven series.

Bittner, a 17-year-old from Crookston, MN, is in his second season in the WHL with the Winterhawks.  The 6’4”, 195-lb left wing is coming off a 2013-14 regular season that saw him net 22 goals and 49 points in 63 games.  Bittner has also tallied five goals and 11 points through 16 games during the 2014 WHL playoffs.  Listed and signed by Portland in April 2012, Bittner has amassed 34 goals and 72 points in 108 career regular-season contests.  He is eligible for the 2015 NHL Draft.


APRIL 21, 2014 - APRIL 27, 2014: NICOLAS PETAN, PORTLAND WINTERHAWKS

The Western Hockey League announced today that Portland Winterhawks’ forward Nicolas Petan is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week for the week ending April 27, 2014.  

Petan scored three goals and four assists for seven points along with an even +/- rating over three games this past week, leading the Winterhawks to three victories over the Kelowna Rockets as they captured the 2014 WHL Western Conference championship.

On Tuesday, April 22, Petan recorded a pair of assists in a 4-3 overtime victory over the Rockets in Game 3 of the best-of-seven series in Portland.  On Wednesday, April 23, Petan scored three power play goals, including the game-winner, and was named the game’s 1st Star in a 5-1 victory over the visiting Rockets in Game 4.  On Friday, April 25, Petan picked up two assists in a 7-3 series-clinching victory over the Rockets in Game 5 in Kelowna.

Petan, an 18-year-old from Delta, B.C, is in his third season in the WHL with the Winterhawks.  The 5’9”, 173-lb center has appeared in 198 career WHL regular-season games for Portland, piling up 95 goals and 174 assists for 269 points.  Portland’s first pick, 16th overall, in the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft, Petan has also amassed 16 goals and 49 points in 64 career post-season games.  Petan was selected by the Winnipeg Jets in the second round, 43rd overall, in the 2013 NHL Draft.


APRIL 14, 2014 - APRIL 20, 2014: CURTIS LAZAR, EDMONTON OIL KINGS

The Western Hockey League announced today that Edmonton Oil Kings forward Curtis Lazar is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week for the week ending April 20, 2014. 

Lazar scored three goals and added one assist for four points along with a +4 rating over two games this past weekend, leading the Oil Kings to a pair of victories over the Medicine Hat Tigers in the 2014 WHL Eastern Conference final.

On Friday, April 18, Lazar tallied a goal and an assist while earning 1st Star honors in an 8-3 victory over the visiting Tigers in Game 1 of the best-of-seven series.  On Sunday, April 20, Lazar scored twice, including the game-winner, while also being named the game’s 1st Star in a 3-1 triumph over the Tigers in Game 2 of the series.

Lazar, an 18-year-old from Vernon, B.C, is in his third season in the WHL with the Oil Kings.  The 6’0”, 196-lb center has appeared in 199 career WHL regular-season games for the Oil Kings, amassing 99 goals and 169 points.  The Oil Kings’ first pick, 2nd overall, in the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft, Lazar has also accumulated 24 goals and 46 points in 57 career post-season games.  Lazar was selected by the Ottawa Senators in the first round, 17th overall, in the 2013 NHL Draft.

APRIL 7, 2014 - APRIL 13, 2014: COLE SANFORD, MEDICINE HAT TIGERS

The Western Hockey League announced today that Medicine Hat Tigers’ forward Cole Sanford is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week for the week ending April 13, 2014.  

Sanford recorded four goals and seven points over three games in the past week as the Tigers continued their WHL Eastern Conference second-round series versus the Kootenay Ice.

On Thursday, April 10, Sanford recorded an assist in a 7-4 loss to the Ice in Game 4 of the best-of-seven series in Cranbrook, B.C.  On Saturday, April 12, with the Tigers facing elimination, Sanford stepped up to score four goals and two assists for six points while being named the game’s 1st Star in a 9-2 win over the visiting Ice in Game 5 of the series.  Sanford was held without a point in a 4-1 road loss to the Ice in Game 3 on Wednesday, April 9.

Sanford, an 18-year-old from Vernon, B.C., is in his second season in the Western Hockey League with the Tigers, and finished third on the team in scoring with 33 goals and 73 points along with a +43 rating during the 2013-14 regular season.  A sixth-round pick, 117th overall, in the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft, Sanford has amassed 35 goals and 84 points in 125 career regular-season contests.  He is eligible for the 2014 NHL Draft.


MARCH 31, 2014 - APRIL 6, 2014: DAMON SEVERSON, KELOWNA ROCKETS

The Western Hockey League announced today that Kelowna Rockets’ defenceman Damon Severson is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week for the week ending April 6, 2014.  

Severson scored three goals and added four assists for seven points along with a +3 rating in two games over the last week, leading the Rockets to a pair of victories over the Seattle Thunderbirds to open their Western Conference second-round playoff match-up.

On Thursday, April 3rd, Severson notched two goals and two assists while being named the game’s 1st Star in a 6-2 win over the visiting Thunderbirds in the series opener.  On Saturday, April 5th, Severson tallied a power play goal and added a pair of assists as the Rockets skated to a 6-3 win over the Thunderbirds to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.

Severson, a 19-year-old from Melville, SK, is in his fourth season in the WHL as a member of the Rockets.  A 2013-14 Western Conference Second-Team All-Star, Severson finished third on the Rockets in regular-season scoring with 61 points, and currently ranks second on the team in playoff scoring with nine points.  Selected in the ninth round, 192nd overall, in the 2009 WHL Bantam Draft, Severson has appeared in 260 career regular-season contests for the Rockets, amassing 36 goals and 167 points.  Severson was chosen in the second round, 60th overall, by the New Jersey Devils in the 2012 NHL Draft.


MARCH 24, 2014 - MARCH 30, 2014: JAEDON DESCHENEAU, KOOTENAY ICE

The Western Hockey League announced today that Kootenay Ice forward Jaedon Descheneau is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week for the week ending March 30, 2014.  

Descheneau scored seven goals and added eight assists for 15 points to go with a +4 rating in four games over the past week, helping the Ice to three victories in that span as they eliminated the Calgary Hitmen in the first round of the 2014 WHL playoffs.

On Monday, March 24, Descheneau scored once and picked up five assists for six points while being named the game’s 1st Star in a 7-6 overtime loss to the Hitmen in Game 3 of the series in Cranbrook, B.C.  On Tuesday, March 25, he scored the game-winning goal in the final minute of regulation play, added an assist, and was selected as the game’s 1st Star in a 5-4 triumph over the visiting Hitmen in Game 4.  On Thursday, March 27, Descheneau scored two goals, including the game-winner, and added an assist while earning 2nd Star honors in a 6-5 win in Calgary in Game 5 of the series.  On Saturday, March 29, Descheneau tallied three goals and an assist while claiming 1st Star honors in a 5-3 victory over the Hitmen in Cranbrook, giving the Ice a 4-2 best-of-seven series win.

Descheneau, 1995-born right wing from Edmonton, AB, is in his third season in the WHL with the Kootenay Ice.  The 5’9”, 186-lb forward amassed 44 goals and 98 points in 70 regular-season games for Kootenay this season, and currently leads all players in post-season scoring with seven goals and 17 points in just six games.  A third-round pick, 62nd overall, by Kootenay in the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft, Descheneau has accumulated 77 goals and 190 points in 193 career regular-season games.  He is eligible for the 2014 NHL Draft.


MARCH 17, 2014 - MARCH 23, 2014: RYAN PULOCK, BRANDON WHEAT KINGS

The Western Hockey League announced today that Brandon Wheat Kings’ defenceman Ryan Pulock is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week for the week ending March 23, 2014.  It’s the second Denny’s WHL Player of the Week award of the season for Pulock.

Pulock scored two goals and four points to go with a +5 rating in two road games on the weekend, helping the Wheat Kings take a 2-0 lead over the Regina Pats in their Eastern Conference first-round playoff series.

On Saturday, March 22, Pulock tallied a goal and an assist while being named the game’s 1st Star in a 6-3 victory over the Pats in Game 1 of their series in Regina, SK.  On Sunday, March 23, Pulock scored again and set up another for his second straight two-point outing, and was named the game’s 3rd Star in an 8-4 triumph in Regina, giving the Wheat Kings a 2-0 series lead.

Pulock, a 19-year-old from Grandview, MB, is in his fourth season in the WHL with the Wheat Kings, and finished second on the team in regular-season scoring with 63 points in 66 games.  The Wheat Kings’ seventh-round pick, 136th overall, in the 2009 WHL Bantam Draft, Pulock has played 261 career regular-season contests while amassing 210 points, including a franchise-record 64 goals.  Pulock was drafted in the first round, 15th overall, by the New York Islanders in the 2013 NHL Draft.


MARCH 10, 2014 - MARCH 16, 2014: COLLIN VALCOURT, PRINCE ALBERT RAIDERS

The Western Hockey League announced today that Prince Albert Raiders’ forward Collin Valcourt is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week for the week ending March 16, 2014.  

Valcourt tallied five goals and six assists for 11 points along with a +6 rating in four games over the past week, leading the Raiders to a 2-2-0-0 record in that span as they clinched a spot in the tiebreaker game for the eighth and final playoff berth in the WHL Eastern Conference.

On Tuesday, March 11, Valcourt scored once and added two assists for three points in a 6-3 road loss to the Moose Jaw Warriors.  On Wednesday, March 12, he scored the Raiders’ only goal in a 7-1 defeat to the Wheat Kings in Brandon, MB.  On Friday, March 14, Valcourt netted two goals and two assists with a +4 rating while earning 1st Star honors in a 7-2 triumph over the visiting Saskatoon Blades.  Valcourt finished the regular season with a goal and two assists in a 6-4 victory over the Blades in Saskatoon.

Valcourt, who turns 21 on March 18th, is in his fourth and final campaign in the Western Hockey League, and first season with the Prince Albert Raiders.  Originally listed by the Spokane Chiefs, Valcourt has played 266 career regular-season games for the Chiefs, Saskatoon Blades and the Raiders, scoring 76 goals and 168 points.  Valcourt is a free agent.


MARCH 3, 2014 - MARCH 9, 2014: LEON DRAISAITL, PRINCE ALBERT RAIDERS

The Western Hockey League announced today that Prince Albert Raiders’ forward Leon Draisaitl is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week for the week ending March 9, 2014.  It’s the second Denny’s WHL Player of the Week award of the season for Draisaitl.

Draisaitl netted five goals and four assists for nine points along with a +5 rating over three games in the past week, leading the Raiders to three consecutive wins in that span as they continue their push for a playoff berth.

On Tuesday, March 4th, Draisaitl scored twice and set up two more for a four-point outing while being named the game’s 1st Star in a 9-2 win over the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors.  On Friday, March 7th, he scored twice and added two assists for his second straight four-point outing and was named the game’s 1st Star in a 5-2 win over the visiting Calgary Hitmen.  Draisaitl closed out the week by netting the game-winning goal – his 35th marker of the season – and claiming 2nd Star honors in a 3-2 triumph over the visiting Brandon Wheat Kings on Saturday night.

Draisaitl, an 18-year-old from Cologne, Germany, is in his second season in the WHL with the Prince Albert Raiders.  He has amassed 35 goals and 97 points in 60 games for the Raiders this season, and currently sits among the top five scorers in the WHL.  A top-ranked prospect for the 2014 NHL Draft, Draisaitl has amassed 56 goals and 155 points in 124 career regular-season contests.  Draisaitl was selected by the Raiders with the second overall pick in the 2012 CHL Import Draft.


FEBRUARY 24, 2014 - MARCH 2, 2014: JAYCE HAWRYLUK, BRANDON WHEAT KINGS

The Western Hockey League announced today that Brandon Wheat Kings’ forward Jayce Hawryluk is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week for the week ending March 2, 2014.  It’s the second Denny’s WHL Player of the Week award of the season for Hawryluk.

Hawryluk scored six goals and added four assists for 10 points along with a +6 rating in three games over the past week, helping the Wheat Kings post a 2-0-0-1 record in that span.

On Wednesday, February 26th, Hawryluk scored twice, including the game-winner, and added an assist while earning 1st Star honors in a 6-2 victory over the visiting Lethbridge Hurricanes.  On Saturday, March 1st, he tallied two goals and three assists for five points while being named the game’s 1st Star in an 8-5 victory over the Blades in Saskatoon, SK.  Hawryluk finished off the week with his third consecutive two-goal performance while claiming 2nd Star honors in a 4-3 shootout defeat in Swift Current, SK.

Hawryluk, an 18-year-old product of Roblin, MB, is in his second season in the Western Hockey League with the Brandon Wheat Kings, and currently leads the team in scoring with 24 goals and 64 points in 58 games.  The Wheat Kings’ second-round pick, 32nd overall, in the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft, Hawryluk has amassed 42 goals and 107 points in 118 career WHL contests.  He is eligible for the 2014 NHL Draft.


FEBRUARY 17, 2014 - FEBRUARY 23, 2014: MORGAN KLIMCHUK, REGINA PATS

The Western Hockey League announced today that Regina Pats’ forward Morgan Klimchuk is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week for the week ending February 23, 2014.  

Klimchuk scored six goals and three assists for 9 points with a +4 rating in four games over the past week to lead the Pats to four straight victories in that span. 

On Monday, February 17th, Klimchuk notched a goal and an assist as the Pats posted a 4-0 shutout win over the visiting Brandon Wheat Kings.  On Wednesday, February 19th, he tallied three goals and was named the game’s 3rd Star in a 4-2 road victory over the Saskatoon Blades.  On Friday, February 21st, Klimchuk recorded an assist on the game-winning goal as the Pats skated to a 3-2 win over the visiting Victoria Royals.  Klimchuk finished the week with two goals and an assist to go with 1st Star honors in a 5-4 shootout victory over the visiting Calgary Hitmen on Saturday, February 22nd.

Klimchuk, an 18-year-old from Calgary, AB, is in his third WHL season with the Regina Pats, and currently sits tied for third in team scoring with 61 points, including 25 goals, in 48 games.  Selected by the Pats with the fifth overall pick in the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft, the 5’11”, 185-lb left winger has accumulated 79 goals and 174 points in 192 career regular-season contests.  Klimchuk was chosen in the first round, 28th overall, by his hometown Calgary Flames in the 2013 NHL Draft.


FEBRUARY 10, 2014 - FEBRUARY 16, 2014: TAYLOR LEIER, PORTLAND WINTERHAWKS

The Western Hockey League announced today that Portland Winterhawks’ forward Taylor Leier is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week for the week ending February 16, 2014.  

Leier tallied four goals and six assists for 10 points with a +4 rating in four games over the past week, helping the Winterhawks to four straight road wins in that span. 

On Monday, February 10th, Leier netted a goal and three assists to help lead the visiting Winterhawks to an 8-4 win over the Prince George Cougars.  On Wednesday, February 12th, he scored once in a 6-4 victory over the Cougars in Prince George.  On Friday, February 14th, Leier tallied two goals, including his 30th of the season, and added two assists while earning 1st Star honors in a 7-4 win in Kamloops.  On Saturday, February 15th, Leier drew an assist to help the Winterhawks set a new franchise record with their 16th consecutive victory in a 7-4 win in Vancouver.

Leier, a Saskatoon, SK, product who just celebrated his 20th birthday, is in his third season in the WHL with the Winterhawks, and currently sits fourth on the team in scoring with 31 goals and 64 points in 49 games.  Selected in the second round, 24th overall, in the 2009 WHL Bantam Draft, Leier has played 185 career regular-season games for Portland, scoring 71 goals and 164 points.  He was a fourth-round pick, 117th overall, by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2012 NHL Draft.


FEBRUARY 3, 2014 - FEBRUARY 9, 2014: SAM REINHART, KOOTENAY ICE

The Western Hockey League announced today that Kootenay Ice forward Sam Reinhart is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week for the week ending February 9, 2014.  

Reinhart netted three goals and eight assists for 11 points to go with a +8 rating in three games over the past week, leading the Ice to three straight wins in that span. 

On Tuesday, February 4th, Reinhart scored once and added four assists for a five-point effort while claiming 2nd Star honors in a 6-3 victory over the visiting Saskatoon Blades.  On Friday, February 7th, Reinhart tallied a goal and two assists to lead the Ice to an 8-1 win over the Hurricanes in Lethbridge, AB.  On Saturday, February 8th, he extended his point streak to 13 games with a goal and two assists while earning 1st Star honors in a 4-2 triumph over the visiting Hurricanes.

Reinhart, an 18-year-old from Vancouver, B.C., is in his third season in the WHL with the Kootenay Ice.  He is currently tied for fourth in WHL scoring with 76 points in just 43 games.  Selected by the Ice in the first round, 15th overall, in the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft, Reinhart has amassed 92 goals and 225 points in 186 career regular-season games.  Reinhart, the 2011-12 WHL Rookie of the Year, is eligible for the 2014 NHL Draft.


JANUARY 27, 2014 - FEBRUARY 2, 2014: MYLES BELL, KELOWNA ROCKETS

The Western Hockey League announced today that Kelowna Rockets’ forward Myles Bell is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week for the week ending February 2, 2014.  It’s the second Denny’s WHL Player of the Week award this season for Bell.

Bell scored six goals and three assists for nine points along with a +2 rating in three games over the past week, leading the Rockets to a 2-0-0-1 record in that span. 

On Friday, January 31st, Bell scored twice and added an assist for a three-point effort in a 4-2 victory over the Blazers in Kamloops, B.C.  On Saturday, February 1st, Bell scored four goals, including the game winner, and added two assists for a career-best six-point outing while earning 1st Star honors in a 7-3 victory over the visiting Blazers.  He was held pointless in a 6-5 shootout loss to the visiting Spokane Chiefs on Wednesday, January 29th.

Bell, a 20-year-old product of Calgary, AB, is in his fifth season in the WHL and third campaign with the Rockets.  He currently leads the Rockets with 35 goals and 61 points in 50 games while helping the Club to first place in the overall WHL standings.  Drafted in the first round, 17th overall, by the Regina Pats in the 2008 WHL Bantam Draft, Bell has amassed 106 goals and 259 points in 308 career WHL contests.  Bell was selected by the New Jersey Devils in the sixth round, 160th overall, in the 2012 NHL Draft.


JANUARY 20, 2014 - JANUARY 26, 2014: BRENDAN LEIPSIC, PORTLAND WINTERHAWKS

The Western Hockey League announced today that Portland Winterhawks’ forward Brendan Leipsic is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week for the week ending January 26, 2014.

Leipsic scored three goals and six assists for nine points along with a +9 rating in three games over the past week, helping the Winterhawks post a perfect 3-0-0-0 record in that span.

On Monday, January 20th, Leipsic tallied a goal and three assists while posting a +4 rating and earning 1st Star honors in a 5-2 victory over the visiting Vancouver Giants.  On Friday, January 24th, he also notched a goal and three assists and a +4 rating while being named the game’s 3rd Star in a 5-1 win over the visiting Everett Silvertips.  On Sunday, January 26th, Leipsic scored for a fifth straight game as the Winterhawks managed a 6-2 win in Everett.

Leipsic, a 19-year-old from Winnipeg, MB, is in his fourth season in the WHL with the Winterhawks.  The 2012-13 WHL scoring co-champion has amassed 29 goals and 63 points in just 38 games this season for the U.S. Division-leading Winterhawks.  A sixth-round pick, 112th overall, in the 2009 WHL Bantam Draft, Leipsic has scored 122 goals and 274 points in 239 career WHL regular-season games.  Leipsic was chosen in the third round, 89th overall, by the Nashville Predators in the 2012 NHL Draft.


JANUARY 13, 2014 - JANUARY 19, 2014: DERRICK POULIOT, PORTLAND WINTERHAWKS

The Western Hockey League announced today that Portland Winterhawks’ defenceman Derrick Pouliot is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week for the week ending January 19, 2014.

Pouliot recorded one goal and four assists for five points along with a +5 rating in two games over the past week, helping the Winterhawks post a pair of wins in that span.

On Friday, January 17th, Pouliot scored a power play goal and added two assists for a three-point effort while being named the game’s 2nd Star in an 8-2 victory over the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors.  On Sunday, January 19th, Pouliot picked up two assists and was chosen as the game’s 3rd Star in a 5-0 shutout win over the visiting Spokane Chiefs.

Pouliot, a 19-year-old from Weyburn, SK, is in his fourth season with Portland.  He currently leads all Winterhawks’ blue liners and sits tied for fifth among all WHL defenders in scoring with 40 points, including 11 goals, in 36 games this season.  The first overall pick from the 2009 WHL Bantam Draft, Pouliot has recorded 36 goals and 175 points in 223 career regular-season games for the Winterhawks, and has amassed eight goals and 41 points in 64 career playoff games.  Pouliot was selected in the first round, eighth overall, by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2012 NHL Draft.


JANUARY 6, 2014 - JANUARY 12, 2014: TODD FIDDLER, PRINCE GEORGE COUGARS

The Western Hockey League announced today that Prince George Cougars’ forward Todd Fiddler is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week for the week ending January 12, 2014.

Fiddler recorded five goals and four assists for nine points over four games in the past week as the Cougars posted a 1-2-0-1 record in that span.

On Tuesday, January 7th, Fiddler tallied three goals and two assists for a five-point effort while being named the game’s 2nd Star in a 9-7 loss to the visiting Seattle Thunderbirds.  On Wednesday, January 8th, he notched an assist in a 2-1 shootout loss to the Thunderbirds in Prince George.  On Friday, Fiddler picked up an assist in a 6-5 setback on the road to the Vancouver Giants.  Fiddler finished the week with two goals and 2nd Star honors in a 4-3 shootout victory over the Blazers in Kamloops.

Fiddler, a 20-year-old from Meadow Lake, SK, is in his fourth and final season in the WHL.  He was acquired by the Cougars from Moose Jaw in early November, and has posted an impressive 22 goals and 44 points in just 26 games with the Club.  He currently sits tied for 10th in League scoring with 54 points.  Selected by the Medicine Hat Tigers in the third round, 65th overall, of the 2008 WHL Bantam Draft, Fiddler has played 254 career regular-season WHL contests for the Tigers, Prince Albert Raiders, Spokane Chiefs and the Cougars, scoring 101 goals and 197 points. 

DECEMBER 30, 2013 - JANUARY 5, 2014: MYLES BELL, KELOWNA ROCKETS

The Western Hockey League announced today that Kelowna Rockets’ forward Myles Bell is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week for the week ending January 5, 2014.

Bell scored five goals and added five assists for 10 points along with a +6 rating in four games over the past week, helping the Rockets post a 3-1-0 record in that span.

On Tuesday, December 31st, Bell scored once and added two assists to help lead the Rockets to a 9-3 victory over the Winterhawks in Portland, OR.  On Thursday, January 2nd, Bell scored twice and set up two more while earning 1st Star honors in a 7-2 victory in Portland.  Held off the score sheet in a 4-2 loss in Vancouver to the Giants on Friday, January 3rd, Bell responded with two goals and an assist while being named the game’s 1st Star in a 4-2 victory over the visiting Giants on Saturday, January 4th in Kelowna, B.C.

Bell, a 20-year-old product of Calgary, AB, is in his fifth season in the WHL and third campaign with the Rockets.  He currently leads the Rockets with 23 goals and ranks second on the team with 43 points in 37 games while helping the Club to first place in the overall WHL standings.  Drafted in the first round, 17th overall, by the Regina Pats in the 2008 WHL Bantam Draft, Bell has amassed 94 goals and 241 points in 295 career WHL contests.  Bell was selected by the New Jersey Devils in the sixth round, 160th overall,  in the 2012 NHL Draft.


DECEMBER 9, 2013 - DECEMBER 15, 2013 - MIKE AVIANI, SPOKANE CHIEFS

The Western Hockey League announced today that Spokane Chiefs’ forward Mike Aviani is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week for the week ending December 15, 2013.

Aviani tallied three goals and five assists for eight points along with a +4 rating in three games during the past week, helping the Chiefs to three straight victories in that span.

On Wednesday, December 11th, Aviani scored the game-winning goal on the power play and added an assist to help the Chiefs post a 5-3 victory over the visiting Everett Silvertips.  On Saturday, December 14th, Aviani tallied his 25th goal of the season while adding four assists for a five-point effort, earning 1st Star honors, in a 6-3 win over the visiting Prince George Cougars.  On Sunday, December 15th, Aviani tallied the game-winning goal and was named the game’s 2nd Star in a 2-0 shutout win over the Silvertips in Everett, WA.

Aviani, a 20-year-old product of North Vancouver, B.C., is in his fourth season and final campaign in the WHL with the Spokane Chiefs.  He currently ranks among the WHL scoring leaders with 26 goals and 50 points in 35 games this season.  The Chiefs’ fifth-round pick, 104th overall, in the 2008 WHL Bantam Draft, Aviani has played 239 career regular-season games for the Chiefs, netting 77 goals and 99 assists for 176 points.


DECEMBER 2, 2013 - DECEMBER 8, 2013: CHANDLER STEPHENSON, REGINA PATS

The Western Hockey League announced today that Regina Pats’ forward Chandler Stephenson is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week for the week ending December 8, 2013.

Stephenson scored four goals and added two assists for six points along with a +6 rating in three road games this past week, leading the Pats to a 2-1-0-0 record in that span.

On Wednesday, December 4th, Stephenson scored two goals and was named the game’s 2nd Star as the Pats suffered a 5-4 loss to the Wheat Kings in Brandon, MB.  On Friday, December 6th, Stephenson tallied two goals and an assist with a +3 rating while earning 1st Star honors in a 5-4 shootout victory in Moose Jaw over the Warriors.  On Saturday, December 7th, Stephenson picked up an assist on the game-winning goal, extending his point streak to five games, as the Pats posted a 3-2 win over the Saskatoon Blades. 

Stephenson, a 19-year-old from Saskatoon, SK, is in his fourth season in the WHL with the Regina Pats, and currently leads the team in scoring with 37 points, including 13 goals, in 28 games.  The 5’11”, 200-lb centerman was selected by the Washington Capitals in the third round, 77th overall, in the 2012 NHL Draft.  Stephenson, the Pats’ first-round pick in the 2009 WHL Bantam Draft, has amassed 56 goals and 143 points in 189 career regular-season games for Regina.


NOVEMBER 25, 2013 - DECEMBER 1, 2013: LEON DRAISATIL, PRINCE ALBERT RAIDERS

The Western Hockey League announced today that Prince Albert Raiders’ forward Leon Draisaitl is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week for the week ending December 1, 2013.

Draisaitl scored four goals and added three assists for seven points along with a +3 rating in two games this past week, leading the Raiders to a pair of victories in that span.

On Friday, November 29th, Draisaitl scored the game-tying goal and game-winning goal in overtime while adding an assist and being named the game’s 1st Star in a 7-6 come-from-behind win over the Pats in Regina, SK.  On Saturday, November 30th, Draisaitl scored twice and set up two more, including the tying goal at 19:48 of the third period and the game-winner just 18 seconds into overtime, and earned 2nd Star honors in a 5-4 victory over the Wheat Kings in Brandon, MB.

Draisaitl, an 18-year-old from Cologne, Germany, is in his second season in the WHL with the Prince Albert Raiders.  He currently leads the Raiders and sits tied for fifth in WHL scoring with 42 points on 15 goals and 27 assists through 28 games.  A top-ranked prospect for the 2014 NHL Draft, Draisaitl has amassed 36 goals and 100 points in 92 career regular-season contests.  Draisaitl was selected by the Raiders with the second overall pick in the 2012 CHL Import Draft.


NOVEMBER 18, 2013 - NOVEMBER 24, 2013: JOSH WINQUIST, EVERETT SILVERTIPS

The Western Hockey League announced today that Everett Silvertips’ forward Josh Winquist is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week for the week ending November 24, 2013.

Winquist recorded four goals and four assists for eight points along with a +3 rating over four games in the past week, leading the Silvertips to a 4-0 record on the road in that span.  It’s the second Denny’s WHL Player of the Week award for Winquist this season.

On Tuesday, November 19th, Winquist scored his 18th goal of the season to help the Silvertips to a 3-2 win over the Kootenay Ice in Cranbrook, BC.  On Wednesday, November 20th, he recorded three assists with a +2 rating while being named the game’s 1st Star in a 3-2 victory over the Lethbridge Hurricanes.  On Friday, November 22nd, Winquist scored twice and added an assist while earning 1st Star honors in a 4-3 victory over the Central Division-leading Medicine Hat Tigers.  On Saturday, Winquist tallied the game’s only goal and was named the 3rd Star in a 1-0 shutout victory over the Hitmen in Calgary, AB.

Winquist, a 20-year-old from St. Albert, AB, is in his fifth and final season in the WHL with the Everett Silvertips.  The 6’0”, 180-lb left wing currently leads the Silvertips and ranks third in the WHL in scoring with 21 goals and 48 points in 27 games.  A third-round pick, 66th overall, in the 2008 WHL Bantam Draft, Winquist has played 261 career games for the Silvertips, recording 75 goals and 171 points.


NOVEMBER 11, 2013 - NOVEMBER 17, 2013: RYAN PULOCK, BRANDON WHEAT KINGS

The Western Hockey League announced today that Brandon Wheat Kings’ defenceman Ryan Pulock is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week for the week ending November 17, 2013.

Pulock recorded two goals and five assists for seven points along with a +3 rating in three games over the past week, helping the Wheat Kings post three consecutive victories in that span.

On Monday, November 11th, Pulock picked up three assists and was named the game’s 2nd Star in a 5-3 victory over the visiting Lethbridge Hurricanes.  On Wednesday, November 13th, Pulock tallied a power play goal as the Wheat Kings posted a 5-2 road victory over the Saskatoon Blades.  On Friday, November 15th, Pulock scored his second goal in as many games and added two assists while being named the game’s 1st Star in a 6-2 win over the visiting Saskatoon Blades.

Pulock, a product of Grandview, MB, is in his fourth WHL campaign with the Brandon Wheat Kings, and currently ranks 11th among all WHL defencemen in scoring with eight goals and 21 points in 18 games this season.  Chosen by the New York Islanders in the first round, 15th overall, in the 2013 NHL draft, Pulock has put up 49 goals and 168 points in 213 career regular-season contests for the Wheat Kings.  He was Brandon’s seventh-round pick, 136th overall, in the 2009 WHL Bantam Draft.


NOVEMBER 4, 2013 - NOVEMBER 10, 2013: MITCH HOLMBERG, SPOKANE CHIEFS


The Western Hockey League announced today that Spokane Chiefs’ forward Mitch Holmberg is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week for the week ending November 10, 2013.

Holmberg recorded nine points on five goals and four assists to go with a +4 rating over three games in the last week, helping lead the Chiefs to a 2-1-0 record on the road in that span, and earning his second Denny’s WHL Player of the Week honors of the season.

On Wednesday, November 6th, Holmberg tallied a goal – the overtime winner – and chipped in two assists while being named the game’s 2nd Star in a 5-4 victory over the Tigers in Medicine Hat.  On Friday, November 8th, Holmberg recorded his second hat trick of the season while adding an assist and earning 1st Star honors as the Chiefs defeated the Lethbridge Hurricanes 6-2.  On Saturday, November 9th, Holmberg notched a goal and an assist as the Chiefs fell 3-2 to the Kootenay Ice in Cranbrook, B.C.

Holmberg, a product of Sherwood Park, AB, currently leads all WHL players in scoring with 23 goals and 51 points in just 21 games this season, and has recorded at least one point in 20 of the 21 games he’s played.  The 20-year-old, five-year WHL veteran was the Chiefs’ first-round pick, 21st overall, in the 2008 WHL Bantam Draft.  Holmberg has played 263 career regular-season games for Spokane, amassing 108 goals and 229 points.

The Western Hockey League announced today that forward Jayce Hawryluk of the Brandon Wheat Kings is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week for the week ending November 3, 2013.    

Hawryluk recorded eight points on six goals and two assists to go with a +4 rating in three games over the past week, helping the Wheat Kings post a 2-1-0-0 record on the road in that span.

On Friday, November 1st, Hawryluk scored three goals, including the game-winner, and added an assist while being named the game’s 1st Star in leading the visiting Wheat Kings to a 6-3 win over the Silvertips in Everett, WA.  On Sunday, November 3rd, Hawryluk recorded his second straight three-goal performance, added an assist, and earned 1st Star honors in a 6-2 victory over the Lethbridge Hurricanes.  He was held without a point in a 4-2 loss to the Seattle Thunderbirds in Kent, WA, on Tuesday, October 29th.

Hawryluk, a native of Roblin, MB, is in his second season in the WHL with the Wheat Kings, and currently leads the team in scoring with nine goals and 19 points in 17 games.  The Wheat Kings’ second-round pick, 32nd overall, in the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft, Hawryluk has amassed 27 goals and 62 points in 78 career regular-season games.  He is eligible for the 2014 NHL Draft.


OCTOBER 21, 2013 - OCTOBER 27, 2013: JOSH WINQUIST, EVERETT SILVERTIPS

The Western Hockey League announced today that Everett Silvertips’ forward Josh Winquist is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week for the week ending October 27, 2013.    

Winquist recorded seven points on one goal and six assists to go with a +2 rating over two games in the past week, leading the Silvertips to two victories in that span.

On Friday, October 25th, Winquist recorded three assists, including setting up the game-winner, as Everett managed a 6-5 victory on the road versus the Vancouver Giants in Vancouver, B.C.  On Saturday, October 26th, Winquist scored the overtime winner and added three assists for a four-point outing as the visiting Silvertips defeated the Kamloops Blazers 7-6 in Kamloops, B.C.

Winquist, a 20-year-old from St. Albert, AB, currently sits tied for eighth in WHL scoring with nine goals and 22 points through 15 games for Everett.  The 6’0”, 180-lb left wing is in his fifth and final season in the Western Hockey League, and has amassed 63 goals and 145 points in 248 career regular-season games for the Silvertips.  Winquist was selected in the third round, 66th overall, by Everett in the 2008 WHL Bantam Draft.

The Western Hockey League announced today that Portland Winterhawks’ forward Nicolas Petan is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week for the week ending October 20, 2013.    

Petan recorded seven points on two goals and five assists to go with a +6 rating over three games in the past week, helping lead the Winterhawks to three victories in that span.

On Wednesday, October 16th, Petan picked up two assists and was +2 as the Winterhawks defeated the visiting Tri-City Americans 4-1.  On Friday, October 18th, Petan tallied a goal and an assist while being named the game’s 1st Star in a 5-4 victory over the visiting Swift Current Broncos.  Petan closed out his week by recording a goal and two assists while earning 3rd Star honors in an 8-1 win over the visiting Tri-City Amercians.

Petan, an 18-year-old from Delta, B.C., is in his third season in the WHL with the Portland Winterhawks, and currently sits second in the WHL scoring race with 23 points in just 11 games this season.  Selected by the Winnipeg Jets in the second round, 43rd overall, of the 2013 NHL Draft, Petan co-led the WHL and CHL in scoring last season with 120 points.  The 5’9”, 173-lb forward has amassed 67 goals and 179 points in 146 career regular-season contests for the Winterhawks.

The Western Hockey League announced today that Everett Silvertips’ defenceman Matt Pufahl is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week for the week ending October 13, 2013.    

Pufahl recorded six points on four goals and two assists along with a +5 rating over four games in the last week, helping lead the Silvertips to a 3-0-1-0 record on the road in that span.

On Tuesday, October 8th, Pufahl scored both goals and was named the game’s 1st Star in a 2-1 victory over his former Club, the Red Deer Rebels, in Red Deer, AB.  On Wednesday, October 9th, Pufahl enjoyed his second straight two-goal outing, including netting the game-winner, in a 4-2 victory over the Oil Kings in Edmonton, AB.  On Friday, October 11th, Pufahl notched an assist in a 3-2 shootout victory in Prince George over the Cougars.  Pufahl finished his week by recording an assist in a 4-3 overtime loss in Prince George on Saturday.

Pufahl, a 20-year-old from Saskatoon, SK, is in his fourth and final WHL campaign, and first season with the Everett Silvertips.  The 6’3”, 210-lb rearguard currently ranks second among all WHL defencemen with five goals and sits tied for third among blue liners with 10 points this season.  Pufahl was selected by the Red Deer Rebels in the fourth round, 68th overall, in the 2008 WHL Bantam Draft.

The Western Hockey League announced today that Kelowna Rockets’ 16-year-old rookie forward Nick Merkley is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week for the week ending October 6, 2013.    

Merkley recorded six points on four goals and two assists to go with a +6 rating over three games in the last week, helping lead the Rockets to three wins in that span.

On Wednesday, October 2nd, Merkley scored a pair of goals in the third period and was named the game’s 2nd Star in a 6-3 Rockets’ win over the Silvertips in Everett, WA.  On Friday, October 4th, Merkley scored another two goals, including the game-winner, and was named the game’s 3rd Star as the Rockets defeated the visiting Portland Winterhawks 6-2.  On Saturday, October 5th, Merkley chipped in a pair of assists for his third straight two-point outing as the Rockets defeated the Winterhawks 6-3 in Kelowna.

Merkley, a product of Calgary, AB, is in his first WHL season with the Rockets, having been drafted with the ninth overall selection in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft.  The 5’11”, 176-lb center currently leads the Rockets in goals with five on the season, and ranks third among all WHL rookies in scoring with eight points in six games.

The Western Hockey League announced today that Swift Current Broncos rookie defenceman Julius Honka is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week.    

Honka netted 6 points over two games, scoring one goal and five assists to go with a +4 rating while helping the Broncos to a pair of victories over the Regina Pats during the opening weekend of the 2013-14 regular season.    

On Thursday, September 19th, Honka scored once and set up two more for a three-point effort to go with 2nd Star honors in his WHL regular-season debut as the Broncos skated to a 7-2 victory over the Pats in Regina, SK.

On Saturday, September 21st, Honka picked up three assists and was named the game’s 1st Star as the Broncos edged the visiting Pats 3-2 in Swift Current, SK.

Honka, a 17-year-old from Jyvaskyla, Finland, is just beginning his first season in the WHL with the Broncos.  The 5’11”, 175-lb rearguard was the Broncos’ first-round pick, 34th overall, in the 2013 CHL Import Draft.  Honka is eligible for the 2014 NHL Draft.
