TIGERS EDGE HITMEN IN SHOOTOUT – Jace Coyle and Bretton Cameron scored in a shootout to lift the visiting Medicine Hat Tigers to a 6-5 win over the Calgary Hitmen in Western Hockey League action on Saturday night.
17-year-old rookie Emerson Etem scored three goals in regulation for the Tigers (20-10-2-4), who have won four straight and nine of their last 11 games, while Cameron and Mark Isherwood also scored. Tyler Bunz turned aside 27 of 32 shots through three periods and overtime, and wasn’t beaten in the shootout for the win.
Ian Schultz notched two goals and two assists for the Hitmen (24-8-1-1), who tied the game with just one second remaining in the third period, but end up seeing a five-game winning streak come to an end with their first shootout loss of the season, while Tyler Fiddler – with two goals and an assist – and Joel Broda also scored. Michael Snider stopped 19 of 24 shots in regulation and overtime, but was beaten twice in the shootout for the loss.
Shane McColgan and Geordie Wudrick scored in a shootout as the visiting Kelowna Rockets claimed a 2-1 win in Moose Jaw over the Warriors on Saturday.
Spencer Main – with a shorthanded marker – scored the only goal in regulation for the Rockets (18-16-1-0), who improve to 3-1 through four games of their six-game East Division road trip. Mark Guggenberger made 21 saves through regulation and overtime, and denied two of three Warriors’ shootout attempts to claim his first win of the season.
Ryan Stanton scored the only goal for the Warriors (17-13-1-2), who have lost four of their last five games. Brandon Glover turned aside 21 shots through three periods and overtime, but was beaten twice in the shootout for the loss.
Derek Hulak scored the decisive goal in a shootout to lift the visiting Saskatoon Blades to a 4-3 win over the Red Deer Rebels on Saturday.
Stefan Elliott tied the game at 3-3 with just 24 seconds to play in regulation while Charles Inglis and Gaelan Patterson also scored in regulation for the Blades (22-6-1-3), who snap a two-game losing skid. Adam Morrison made 20 saves through regulation and overtime, and wasn’t beaten in the shootout to take the win.
Alex Petrovic – with a goal and an assist – Andrej Kudrna and Colin Archer scored in regulation for the Rebels (16-14-0-2), who are 3-0-0-2 in their last five games. Darcy Kuemper made 25 saves in regulation but was beaten once in the shootout to take the loss.
Matt Calvert and Aaron Lewadniuk each tallied a goal and an assist to lead the Brandon Wheat Kings to a 4-2 win over the visiting Edmonton Oil Kings on Saturday.
Jordan DePape and Michael Ferland also scored for the Wheat Kings (23-11-0-2), who stretch their winning streak to six games and remain tied with Saskatoon for top spot in the East Division. Andrew Hayes made 35 saves to record his 14th win of the season.
Keegan Lowe scored his first WHL goal and Rhett Rachinski also counted for the Oil Kings (8-19-4-4), who have lost 11 straight games. Torrie Jung made 31 saves in a losing cause.
Max Ross and Autsin Fyten each tallied a goal and an assist while Brennan Yadlowski picked up three assists to lead the Lethbridge Hurricanes to a 5-1 win over the visiting Regina Pats on Saturday.
Former Pat Graham Hood, Landon Oslanski and Mitch Maxwell also scored for the Hurricanes (10-17-3-1), who snap a four-game home-ice losing skid and move into a tie for fifth place in the Central Division. Brandon Anderson made 15 saves in the win.
Jordan Weal scored the only goal for the Pats (16-17-3-0), who suffer their third straight loss. Dawson Guhle made 35 saves in a losing cause.
Ryan Howse scored his 26th and 27th goals of the season to lead the Chilliwack Bruins to a 5-2 win over the visiting Prince George Cougars on Saturday.
Roman Horak and Alexander Wiklund each tallied a goal and an assist and Jamie Crooks also counted for the Bruins (14-17-1-4), who snap a two-game losing skid. Braden Gamble made 26 saves to earn his second victory of the season.
Alex Rodgers and Dallas Jackson scored for the Cougars (6-25-1-1), who scored both of their goals on the man advantage. Hudson Stremmel made 21 saves in the loss.
Kevin Connauton scored the winning goal in a shootout to lift the visiting Vancouver Giants to a 5-4 win over the Kamloops Blazers on Saturday.
Brendan Gallagher and Craig Cunningham each tallied a goal and two assists while David Musil and Lance Bouma also scored in regulation for the Giants (22-11-1-2), who earn their third straight win and second in as many nights over the Blazers. Jamie Tucker made 30 saves through regulation and overtime, and wasn’t beaten in the shootout to earn the win.
Jimmy Bubnick scored twice and Linden Saip and Matej Bene also scored for the Blazers (13-16-2-3), who suffer their second straight loss. Kurtis Mucha made 32 saves through regulation and overtime, but was beaten once in the shootout for the loss.
Taylor Vause’s shorthanded marker 2:34 into the third period stood as the game-winner as the visiting Swift Current Broncos edged the Spokane Chiefs 2-1 on Saturday.
Stepan Novotny – with his 19th of the season – also scored for the Broncos (17-15-0-2), who record their third road victory of the season. Mark Friesen turned in a 42-save performance to backstop the Broncos to the win.
Brenden Kichton scored the only goal for the Chiefs (20-7-2-0), who see their six-game winning streak come to an end. James Reid made 28 saves in a losing cause.
Kellan Tochkin scored twice, including the go-ahead goal with 2:49 to play in regulation, as the Everett Silvertips edged the visiting Seattle Thunderbirds 2-1 on Saturday.
Kent Simpson made 20 saves to record his eighth win of the season for the Silvertips (17-11-2-1), who snap a five-game losing skid.
Sena Acolatse scored the only goal for the Thunderbirds (12-18-1-3), who see a modest two-game win streak come to an end. Calvin Pickard turned aside 42 of 44 shots he faced in the loss.
Brooks Macek scored twice and set up another to lead the Tri-City Americans to a 5-2 win over the visiting Portland Winterhawks on Saturday.
Neal Prokop, Nils Moser and Justin Feser also counted for the Americans (23-9-0-0), who earn their fourth win of the season over the Winterhawks. Drew Owsley made 33 saves to claim the victory.
Ty Rattie scored both goals for the Winterhawks (20-13-0-1), who have dropped two of their last three games. Mac Carruth made 30 saves in the defeat.
