MCCOLGAN LEADS ROCKETS PAST PATS – 16-year-old rookie Shane McColgan scored three goals and chipped in two assists for a five-point effort to lead the visiting Kelowna Rockets to a 9-5 win over the Regina Pats in Western Hockey League action on Wednesday, December 9th.
Geordie Wudrick notched two goals and two assists, Brandon McMillan scored tallied a pair of goals, and Cody Chikie and Max Adolph also scored for the Rockets (17-15-1-0), who win their second straight contest and their fifth consecutive game on the road. Adam Brown made 39 saves to record the win.
Matt Strueby scored three goals for the Pats (16-15-3-0), who allowed the game’s first six goals by the midway point of the second period, while Dominick Favreau and Tomas Hricina also scored. Damien Ketlo and Dawson Guhle combined for 31 saves in the loss.
Brayden Schenn scored the game-winner 2:03 into overtime as the visiting Brandon Wheat Kings edged the Saskatoon Blades 5-4 on Wednesday.
Matt Calvert scored three goals and Mark Schneider also scored for the Wheat Kings (21-11-0-2), who let a 4-0 lead slip away only to win the game in overtime. Jacob DeSerres turned aside eight of nine shots through 18 minutes of work in the third period and overtime to earn the victory after replacing starter Andrew Hayes, who allowed three goals on 20 shots.
Tyler Kizuik and Braeden Johnson each scored their first WHL goals for the Blades (21-6-1-3), who have dropped three of four meetings with the Wheat Kings this season, while Burke Gallimore and Charles Inglis also scored. Steven Stanford made 21 saves in the loss.
Brandon Herrod notched two goals and an assist and Craig McCallum chipped in three assists to lead the Prince Albert Raiders to a 5-1 win over the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors on Wednesday.
Ryan Button – with a goal and an assist – Garrett Taylor and Colin Reddin also scored for the Raiders (18-14-1-2), who converted two of five power play chances in the contest. Garrett Zemlak turned in a 38-save performance to earn the victory.
Dylan Hood scored the only goal for the Warriors (16-13-1-1), who suffer their third straight defeat and their seventh setback in their last eight games. Jeff Bosch and Brandon Glover combined for 37 saves in the loss.
Hayden Rintoul scored twice and Dustin Sylvester drew four assists to lead the Kootenay Ice to a 5-2 victory over the visiting Edmonton Oil Kings on Wednesday.
Brayden McNabb notched a goal and two assists while Steele Boomer and Kevin King also counted for the Ice (16-14-1-1), who have won five of their last six games and move into a tie with Moose Jaw and Swift Current for seventh place in the Eastern Conference. Todd Mathews made 24 saves in the victory.
Logan Proulx and Brent Raedeke scored for the Oil Kings (8-17-4-4), who suffer their ninth consecutive loss. Torrie Jung and Cam Lanigan combined for 23 saves in a losing cause.
Tristan King and Jace Coyle scored in a shootout to lead the visiting Medicine Hat Tigers to a 2-1 victory over the Red Deer Rebels on Wednesday.
Dustin Cameron scored his 24th goal of the season for the Tigers (18-10-2-4), who have won three straight games away from home and improve to 4-1 versus the Rebels this season. Tyler Bunz turned aside 36 of 37 shots he faced in regulation and overtime, and denied both Rebels’ shootout attempts to claim the victory.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins notched his 17th goal of the season for the Rebels (15-14-0-1), who suffer their first extra-time loss of the season. Darcy Kuemper made 21 saves through three periods and overtime, but was beaten twice in the shootout for the loss.
Brendan Gallagher scored twice and set up another while goaltender Mark Segal turned aside all 17 shots he faced to record the first shutout of his WHL career as the Vancouver Giants blanked the visiting Chilliwack Bruins 5-0 on Wednesday.
Zach Hodder – with a goal and an assist – Garry Nunn and JT Barnett also scored for the Giants (20-11-1-2), who rebound from Sunday’s 4-0 shutout loss in Chilliwack. The Giants remain seven points ahead of Kelowna for top spot in the B.C. Division.
Braden Gamble made 29 saves in a losing cause for the Bruins (13-16-1-4), who see a two-game win streak versus the Giants come to an end.
Brendan Shinnimin scored two goals to lead the Tri-City Americans to a 4-1 win over the visiting Prince George Cougars on Wednesday.
Brooks MAcek notched a goal and an assist and Justin Feser scored his 15th of the season for the Americans (22-8-0-0), who pick up their third straight victory. Drew Owsley made 24 saves to record his 21st win of the season.
Alex Rodgers scored the only goal for the Cougars (5-24-1-1), who drop their third straight decision and their 15th straight road game. Alex Wright made 29 saves in the loss.
